Vaiśampāyana said: O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When the king addressed Pāṇḍu's great-souled sons, the evil-hearted Duryodhana was extremely happy.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब राजा ने पाण्डु के महापराक्रमी पुत्रों को संबोधित किया तो दुष्ट हृदय वाला दुर्योधन अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुआ।
O bull among the Bhārata-s! He privately summoned Purocana, grasped the adviser by the right hand and told him these words.
हे भरतवंशियों में से बैल! उसने अकेले में पुरोकाना को बुलाया, सलाहकार को दाहिने हाथ से पकड़ लिया और उससे ये शब्द कहे।
"O Purocana! This world, with all its riches, is mine. But with me, it is also yours. You should protect it.
"हे पुरोचन! यह संसार, अपनी सारी संपत्ति सहित, मेरा है। लेकिन मेरे साथ, यह तुम्हारा भी है। तुम्हें इसकी रक्षा करनी चाहिए।

I have no other ally who is as trustworthy. I have to consult with you.
मेरा कोई दूसरा सहयोगी नहीं है जो इतना भरोसेमंद हो. मुझे आपसे परामर्श करना है.

हे पिता! तुम इस प्रकार मंत्रणा करो और चतुराई से मेरे शत्रुओं का नाश करो। जो मैं तुमसे करने को कहता हूँ उसे कुशलता से पूरा करो।
Dhṛtarāṣṭra has sent the Pāṇḍava-s to Vāraṇāvata. On Dhṛtarāṣṭra's command, they will sport themselves in the festival there.
धृतराष्ट्र ने पांडवों को वारणावत भेज दिया है। धृतराष्ट्र की आज्ञा पर वे वहाँ उत्सव में भाग लेंगे।

स त्वं रासभयुक्तेन स्यन्दनेनाशुगामिना वारणावतमद्यैव यथा यासि तथा कुरु
Ensure that you reach Vāraṇāvata today on a cart drawn by swift asses.
सुनिश्चित करें कि आप तेज गधों द्वारा खींची जाने वाली गाड़ी पर आज वारणावत पहुँचें।
On reaching there, build an excellent house with four halls on the outskirts of the city—large and full of riches and near the store where weapons are kept.
वहां पहुंच कर नगर के बाहर चार कक्षों वाला, बड़ा और धन-संपदा से युक्त तथा उस भण्डार के पास, जहां हथियार रखे जाते हैं, एक उत्कृष्ट भवन बनवायें।
Use hemp, reṣin and other inflammable materials that can be obtained in the construction.
निर्माण में भांग, रेज़िन और अन्य ज्वलनशील सामग्री का उपयोग करें जिन्हें प्राप्त किया जा सकता है।
Mix the clay with ghee, oil from seeds and a large quantity of lac and plaster the walls with this.
मिट्टी में घी, बीजों का तेल और बड़ी मात्रा में लाख मिलाएं और इससे दीवारों को लीपें।
Also place carefully in the house hemp, cane, ghee, lac, wood and wooden tools,
इसके अलावा घर में भांग, बेंत, घी, लाख, लकड़ी और लकड़ी के औजार भी सावधानी से रखें।

यथा च त्वां न शङ्केरन्परीक्षन्तोऽपि पाण्डवाः आग्नेयमिति तत्कार्यमिति चान्ये च मानवाः
but in such a way that the Pāṇḍava-s or other men are not suspicious on scrutiny and do not deduce that the house has been constructed with inflammable materials.
लेकिन इस तरह से कि जांच करने पर पांडवों या अन्य लोगों को संदेह न हो और यह निष्कर्ष न निकले कि घर का निर्माण ज्वलनशील सामग्री से किया गया है।
After constructing the house in this way, reverently pay homage to the Pāṇḍava-s and get them to live there, with Kuntī and her attendants.
इस प्रकार घर का निर्माण करने के बाद, पांडवों को श्रद्धापूर्वक प्रणाम करें और उन्हें कुंती और उसके परिचारिकाओं सहित वहां रहने दें।

तत्रासनानि मुख्यानि यानानि शयनानि च विधातव्यानि पाण्डूनां यथा तुष्येत मे पिता
For the sons of Pāṇḍu, place beautiful conveyances, seats and beds there, so as to satisfy my father.
पाण्डु के पुत्रों के लिये वहाँ सुन्दर वाहन, आसन और शय्या रखिये, जिससे मेरे पिता संतुष्ट हो सकें।
Do it in such a way that no one in the city of Vāraṇāvata gets to know, until our time arrives.
ऐसा करो कि हमारा समय आने तक वारणावत नगर में किसी को पता न चले।
Knowing that they are asleep in their beds, completely assured and without suspecting danger from anywhere, set fire to it, beginning at the gate.
यह जानते हुए कि वे अपने बिस्तरों में सो रहे हैं, पूरी तरह निश्चिंत हो गए और कहीं से खतरे की आशंका किए बिना, गेट से शुरुआत करते हुए आग लगा दी।
When they have burnt to death in that house, people will not blame us for the death of the Pāṇḍava-s."
जब वे उस घर में जलकर मर जायेंगे, तो लोग पांडवों की मृत्यु के लिए हमें दोषी नहीं ठहराएँगे।"
Purocana promised the Kaurava that he would do this and left for Vāraṇāvata in a cart drawn by asses.
पुरोचन ने कौरवों से वादा किया कि वह ऐसा करेंगे और गधों द्वारा खींची जाने वाली गाड़ी में वारणावत के लिए रवाना हो गए।
O king! He was always obedient to Duryodhana and left quickly. Purocana did as the prince had asked him to.
हे राजा! वह सदैव दुर्योधन का आज्ञाकारी रहा और शीघ्र ही चला गया। पुरोकाना ने वैसा ही किया जैसा राजकुमार ने उससे कहा था।
